Spring Creek Bluegrass Band from Lyons, Colorado wins an unprecedented second Planet Bluegrass band competition title within the same summer.
Spring Creek Bluegrass Band, whose members met in music school in Texas and moved to Colorado a little over a year ago, walked away with their second band championship in 2007.
The four-piece band won the Telluride contest back in June, and won their second over the weekend at the 35th annual Rocky Mountain Bluegrass Festival held in Lyons each July.
“I’m really thrilled to play in a great competition,” says Chris Elliot, who in addition to his bands’ win, also celebrated earning top honors in the banjo instrument contest.
“All the bands were wonderful. RockyGrass is the premier Colorado festival and I am truly excited to play here next year,” says Elliot.
Only once previously has a band won both of the Planet Bluegrass Band Competitions; Hit and Run Bluegrass won RockyGrass in 2002 and Telluride the following summer.
“Planet Bluegrass is thrilled to have a local Lyons band be the first to win both bluegrass band competitions in the same year,” says Steve Szymanski, Plant Bluegrass Vice President. “We can’t wait to have these fine musicians back at RockyGrass in 2008.”
The band has been working hard all summer to prepare for these competitions and the news is finally sinking in that the practice was well worth it.
“I’m still in shock!” says bassist Jessica Smith. “There were some great bands and I am honored that the judges thought enough of our performances to give us this title.”
Spring Creek Bluegrass will be performing all over the state of Colorado through the fall. Check www.myspace/springcreek or springcreekbluegrassband.com/ for all their upcoming dates.

Re: Spring Creek Bluegrass Band in SF now!
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 12:01 PMNow that I've seen 'em (and met 'em), let me put a pitch in for these nice folks. They are really good. Unlike a lot of the bluegrass-inspired bands coming out of the Colorado scene, these kids truly are a bluegrass band. They know that bluegrass is a vocal style as well as a pickin' style and they do the harmony thing really well. And they know ballads are integral to the bluegrass tradition as well as breakneck speed pickin' and they do both of those things well too. Add to that some good originals, and we got ourselves a real bluegrass band here. Yeehaw!
