Interview with Travis Book from the Infamous Stringdusters

In their breakout year of 2007, the Infamous Stringdusters played over 150 dates, including the biggest festivals in acoustic music, jammed on major stages with heroes like David Grisman and Sam Bush, and landed a development deal for motion picture music with Lions Gate Entertainment. With the release of The Infamous Stringdusters, 2008 promises more roads and more new fans in bluegrass and beyond.

Oakhurst has had a reputation for torching bar and theater stages throughout the US with its unique sound and unbridled stage energy for years. But lately, the band has also created a stir on major festival stages, cruise ships and European tours. The band’s adept picking, sweet harmonies, and citybilly swagger have cleary come from playing 200+ shows a year in such varied environments. Oakhurst’s unpretentious, go-for-it interpretation of a genre that’s often handled too reverently, sparks interest in bluegrass by folks who don’t know Doc Watson from Doc Holliday.

Cornmeal continues to forge a path all their own, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass, Americana and folk for a whole new generation of music lovers. Steeped in the tradition of musical acts such as Old and in the Way, John Hartford, and New Grass Revival, Cornmeal has proven to be an influential presence in the world of roots music. Cornmeal has consistently evolved its sound and stage performance using bluegrass as a springboard for long improvisational work and songs ranging from country, rock and blues to jazz, funk and disco.

David Bromberg’s live show remains as unique as ever. Concerts by David and his band are extraordinary events, and performances follow no set pattern of selection. Give and take between performer is complete, spontaneous, and totally sincere. As the NY Times noted “He has such control of his audience that he can, at one moment, hold it in his hand with a tender, touching yet funny anecdotal song, and then set it romping and stomping with a raucous bit of raunch. He is electrifying.”

Just got back from DelFest. put this one on your calender for next year. Great line up of music, sounded great, beautiful setting. As a first year they will learn a few tricks on the layout of the festy as a whole. Maybe move some food vender's closer to stages, bathrooms seemed to stay fairly clean. and a very friendly staff, plenty of camping sprawled out along river and near by river, that i really never even went by. blessed with beautiful weather. many great sets, highlight was probably sat nite with Del McCoury Band and sitting in through out various parts, David Grisman, Sam Bush, Vince Gill, member of their bands and some others that are slipping my mind from lack of sleep

Interview with Bob Crawford from The Avett Brothers

The songs are honest: just chords with real voices singing real melodies. But, the heart and the energy with which they are sung, is really why people are talking, and why so many sing along.

They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that's left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That's the commotion, that's the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are tonight, that's what you'll find.

Bluegrass Graduation Song?

I work at a middle school, and this is my last year, so my boss asked me if I my band would play a song at the 8th grade graduation. We tried to come up with a bluegrass version of 10,000 Maniacs "These Are Days" but it didn't work out. Does anyone have any suggestions for a bluegrass song that is graduation-appropriate?

To recall, it was here in Colorado, in the early 90s, that Vince Herman combined the talents of banjoist Mark Vann, mandolinist/guitarist Drew Emmit, bassist Tye North and drummer Michael Wooten to form the polyethnic slamgrass band now known as Leftover Salmon. These road-dogs scoured the country juggling over 150 shows a year, for years, and satisfying the peoples need for the perfect festivarian act. Vince is currently touring with his band Great American Taxi.
THE EARL BROTHERS (Moonshine Release Party)
It's always a big event when The Earl Brothers appear, let alone release a brand-spankin' new CD. These guys are on to something that's so primeval, insistent, dark, old-time and thrilling that it just about defies description. I find myself completely mesmerized by their gothic Stanley Brothers sound. It just doesn't get anymore tough-edged and raw than the Earls.

He went straight to Appalachia after he graduated from college in 1974 and took locals by surprise, tooling through West Virginia coal mining towns on a bicycle, a mandolin on his back, looking for the ancestral home of bluegrass, long before multiculturalism reached the backwoods.

They've released three fine albums, and their latest release, Viridian, was nominated at the Grammy Awards Ceremony in 2008 for 'Best Country Instrumental Performance'. The Greencards have an ability to go out on stage in front of 20,000 strangers, and magically turn them into friends and fans.

Here is my Interview with Kym Warner from The Greencards:

Besides helming the ever-popular Sam Bush Band, the mandolin prodigy from Kentucky has been a prodigious influence on musicians young and old. Bands like Nickel Creek, Yonder Mountain String Band, and String Cheese Incident, to name just a few, are indebted to Bush's example, not only in his wide-ranging choice of material and rock-based acoustic grooves, but by his captivating, high-energy live shows, which have made him an in demand headliner.

Spring Creek Bluegrass Band

Spring Creek Bluegrass Band from Lyons, Colorado wins an unprecedented second Planet Bluegrass band competition title within the same summer.

Spring Creek Bluegrass Band, whose members met in music school in Texas and moved to Colorado a little over a year ago, walked away with their second band championship in 2007.

The four-piece band won the Telluride contest back in June, and won their second over the weekend at the 35th annual Rocky Mountain Bluegrass Festival held in Lyons each July.

“I’m really thrilled to play in a great competition,” says Chris Elliot, who in addition to his bands’ win, also celebrated earning top honors in the banjo instrument contest.

“All the bands were wonderful. RockyGrass is the premier Colorado festival and I am truly excited to play here next year,” says Elliot.

Only once previously has a band won both of the Planet Bluegrass Band Competitions; Hit and Run Bluegrass won RockyGrass in 2002 and Telluride the following summer.

“Planet Bluegrass is thrilled to have a local Lyons band be the first to win both bluegrass band competitions in the same year,” says Steve Szymanski, Plant Bluegrass Vice President. “We can’t wait to have these fine musicians back at RockyGrass in 2008.”

The band has been working hard all summer to prepare for these competitions and the news is finally sinking in that the practice was well worth it.

“I’m still in shock!” says bassist Jessica Smith. “There were some great bands and I am honored that the judges thought enough of our performances to give us this title.”

Spring Creek Bluegrass will be performing all over the state of Colorado through the fall. Check http://www.myspace/springcreek or http://springcreekbluegrassband.com/ for all their upcoming dates.

Bluegrass guitar teacher?

Hi Everyone:

I've been playing guitar on and off (mostly off) for a several years, and am thinking of taking some lessons to get back up to speed. I've mainly played the singer/songwriter oeuvre and some rock and country, but would like to learn basic bluegrass. Can anyone recommend a teacher in the Oakland area? I work in SF, but figure it would be too tough to haul my guitar on BART or AC Transit when I have lessons.

Thanks!

Now in its 4th year, The River City Bluegrass Festival is a rare chance to see the ‘best of the best’ in acoustic and bluegrass music. Most of the artists are coming from the Nashville area. RiverCity is an interactive, move-around-and-make-friends music event. The festival, which is the largest winter bluegrass/acoustic music festival ever held in Portland, features two and a half days of non-stop music and workshops, including many of the top acts in acoustic music today (see below for performer information). The festival offers music on two stages, from traditional to progressive bluegrass, acoustic Americana , Texas swing, plus a little blues. Performers will hold workshops on banjo, mandolin, guitar, vocal harmony and stage presence. Workshops will begin at 10am on Saturday and Sunday. And, as at any good bluegrass festival worthy of its name, there will be plenty of jamming, both at the convention center and at the headquarters hotel.

Special Hotel Feature: The Red Lion Convention Center is hosting a late night jam on Saturday from 10pm to 6am in the Grand Ballroom. Food & Beverage will be available.

The fine folks at Lagunitas Brewing Company, who are donating all proceeds after costs to Ethos Music Center, will be back to provide the Beer part of the Beer & Wine Garden. Lagunitas will be offering their usual fine selection of fine brews. Nehalem Bay Winery will be selling wine beverages.

Our non-profit partner is Ethos Music Center. Ethos' award winning programs even the educational playing field by making the benefits of music education available to every student regardless of income. Ethos' programs are available on a sliding scale so that every child can participate. Free instrument rental is available for students on free or reduced lunch at school. Ethos' name is derived from the ancient Greek "Doctrine of Ethos" that held that music can change your thoughts, moods, and actions. In light of the numerous studies that demonstrate the tremendous benefits of music education, Ethos believes that every child should have the opportunity to make music. Ethos was established in 1998 in direct response to budget cuts that limited music education in public schools. Visit www.ethos-inc.org for more information about their programs.

The RiverCity Bluegrass Festival will be conducting school assemblies during early January to showcase the sound of bluegrass and other ‘roots’ music. Ethos also receives cash through the Festival’s partners.

recommendations?

I took a road trip cross country this past summer and became entranced by bluegrass. Problem is I don't know where to begin: who to listen to? What CDs to get?

Does anyone have any recommendations of bluegrass standards. stuff with which everyone is familiar? I guess I'll start there.

Thanks in advance.

Berkeley Area Bluegrass Musicians?

Is there anyone in the Berkeley area who would be interetsed in getting together to play some bluegrass? I don't play any instruments, but I do sing, and I would love to get a group togther to jam.

I would really like to get into singing, but I don't know a lot of songs. Can anyone suggest some of the "essential" bluegrass songs? I'd like to at least be able to sing along in September, when I go to Strawberry.

Thanks!

Seeking Old-Time fiddlers in the bay area

Well, I know this isn't really about bluegrass but a lot of people who are into bluegrass dig old-timey music too, so...We are looking for a few good old time fiddlers to play at a very unique event to be held November 4th along the north coast near Santa Cruz. The event is going to be held on a farm that has a 2-acre hay bale maze. It will go until about 4am and will have hay rides and assorted fall/harvest themed events and going-ons. The event itself will not be too large and will be more of a private-party atmosphere. Our budget is somewhat limited but if your interested, get in touch.
Thanks,
Luke

im a part of a gigging east bay based string band with an injury spot to fill. our bass player is out of commission for a few weeks as the result of an injury. we have six gigs to fill in over the next month or so. just wanted to see if there were any bass players around that were interested in jamming a bit. there is the possibility of some compensation, but as the pickers among us know bluegrass is anything but big $.

Hello tribe-

I'm a bluegrass fiddle and mandolin player near Boston -- I play around the area a fair amount with my family band and a few other folks, and teach as well.

There was good jamming at the recent Pemi Valley bluegrass festival up in NH -- maybe you were there...

Check out some samples or get there last disc over at http://www.stiffdeadcat.com/ They got a new one in the can that I know is great if anyone has any leads to a great record label please let me know cuz I want one too! They are always well recieved and no, they will not change their name.

They tend to be pretty busy out here in the upper west coast, greater bay area so if yer out this way, check it out,

Two High String Band, Moonshine Boogie

Unfortunately I missed them when they passed through San Francisco last week. But the new CD from the Two high String Band, "Moonshine Boogie," is a very enjoyable piece of work. I think fans of Larry Keel will especially enjoy it. Check it out at http://www.highstring.com

Hey All,
Just joined the tribe network, was searching tribes. Found you. Bluegrass fan here. Anyon know of any festivals in Arizona? I am going to check the net but they aren't always listed.
Some of the folks I like are: Alison Krauss with Union Station, Grisman, Fleck, Nickel Creek, Bill Monroe, Natalie Macmaster even though she is listed under Celtic, she's an amazing musician.
Anyway, nice to be here.
